Darrell Hibbs

Harry Darrell Hibbs (90) passed away on January 26, 2023 in Des Moines, Iowa. Darrell was born September 1, 1932 in Borger, Texas to Leland and Alice Milbourn Hibbs. He was a long-time resident of Des Moines and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1950. In 1954 he graduated from Drake University with a degree in accounting.

Darrell married Jean Tschantz on September 13, 1953 and they were blessed with four children.  From 1955 to 1957 he served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force and several years in the Iowa Air National Guard. During his career he worked at Ernst & Ernst in Chicago, Shell Oil Co. in Minneapolis, Iowa Farm Bureau in Des Moines, and ended his career at the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines from 1962-1989, retiring as Executive Vice President. After retiring from the FHLB he served for eight years on the Board of Directors at First Federal Savings Bank of Kansas City, Missouri.

Darrell and Jean lived at Lake Panorama for 22 years before returning to Des Moines in 2007. They enjoyed traveling and visited most of the states and several countries. He was a member of Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder and deacon; and was a member and past Master of West Gate Adelphic Masonic Lodge (#509) in Windsor Heights and Panora Lodge (#121). Darrell was instrumental in fundraising and directing the building of the new Panora Lodge. He had been a member of Consistory Za-Ga-Zig Shrine and Jesters.

His favorite hobbies included hunting and fishing with his sons, grandsons and close friends. Darrell was an avid reader and in recent years he read scores of books.

Darrell is survived by his wife, Jean (of 69 years); daughter, Linda Sommerhauser of Kearney, Missouri; sons Daniel (Sandra) Hibbs of Conrath, Wisconsin, David (Joy) Hibbs of Urbandale, Iowa and Douglas (Aileen) Hibbs of Winterset, Iowa; 9 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 18 at Douglas Ave. Presbyterian Church with visitation one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children or Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church.
