Kevin Phillip Schares, 53, of Independence, Iowa passed away Monday, June 5, 2023. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, June 11th from 11:00AM to 4:00PM at the American Legion Hall in Gilbertville, Iowa. Please join the family for food and drinks to celebrate Kevin’s life. 

Kevin was born March 15, 1970, to Elmer and Elaine (Shepek) Schares in Waterloo, Iowa. He attended Don Bosco High School in Gilbertville, Iowa and graduated in 1988. After he graduated from high school, he enlisted into the U.S. Navy. Kevin married Lori Galle on May 17, 2003, in Gilbertville, Iowa. He was a proud member of the American Legion Post 714.

Known to his friends as “Squirrel” or “Bones”, He was a self-proclaimed Jack-of-all-trades and enjoyed wood working, fishing, camping, and of course picking on his sisters. He loved his family and cherished the time spent with them. 

Kevin is survived by his loving wife, Lori Schares and their dog Sally P. Schares; his mother, Elaine of Tucson, Arizona; sisters, Kerrie (Mark) Becker, and Kim (Tracy) Even both of Jesup, Iowa; nieces and nephews, Zane (Aliyah Lukes) Becker, Zach Becker, and Josie Even, all of Jesup, Iowa, and Samantha (Levi) Pratt of Parkersburg, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his father, Elmer Schares. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa Donor Network or the Buchanan County Animal Shelter. 

The family would like to thank the staff of Mercy Hospice of Cedar Rapids for the love and care given to Kevin. They would also like to thank Kevin’s family and friends that have supported him during all of his illnesses throughout the years.
