Dorothy Bockenstedt
Dorothy (Clarksean) Bockenstedt, 85, of Cedar Rapids, IA passed away on August 28, 2022, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha. At her request, there will be no public visitation or services. A private inurnment will be held at a later date at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Dorothy was born to Harry and Leona Clarksean in the rural home of her maternal grandparents at Gladbrook, IA. She attended rural schools around Toledo, IA and graduated from Gladbrook High School in 1955. She attended Iowa State Teachers College (I.S.T.C) in Cedar Falls for two years, then taught first grade in Hubbard, IA for 3 years before returning to Cedar Falls and graduating from State College of Iowa (now UNI) in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts. Dorothy taught 3 years at Tyler Elementary in Cedar Rapids. She married John F. Bockenstedt at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Dorothy was a homemaker as well as worked part-time as a waitress, phone interviewer at Frank N. Magid Associates, and as an elementary substitute teacher in the Linn-Mar, Marion, and Catholic schools from 1978-2002.
Dorothy was baptized and confirmed at Peace Evangelical and Reformed Church in Gladbrook and was a 50 year member of First Congregational Church in Cedar Rapids where she taught lower elementary Sunday school for 17 years.
She is survived by her husband, John; her children, Brian (Jane) Bockenstedt of Center Point, IA; Lisa (Darryl) Uffelmann of Wildwood, MO; and Drew (Jaki) Bockenstedt of Sergeant Bluff, IA; grandchildren Casey and Avery Uffelmann; Madison Bockenstedt; and Bjella, Bode, Brock, and Berlynn Bockenstedt; two sisters, Ruth (Earl) Niedermann of Walker, MN; Carol (Lloyd) Hawes of Sergeant Bluff, IA; a brother, Richard (Marilyn) Clarksean of Mankato, MN; 3 nieces and 3 nephews; one aunt, June Haack of Gladbrook, IA and 18 cousins. She was preceded in death by her father in 1963 and her mother in 1995.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the Gladbrook Community Center, the Cedar Valley Humane Society, or the Domestic Violence Program and Shelter, Waypoint.
