Virgil Allen Epps

Virgil Allen Epps was born 10/3/1936 to Harry Franklin (Frank) Epps and Lois Virginia (Johnson) Epps. He passed away at his home in the City of Decatur Iowa on 7/25/2024.

At birth, Virgil joined older sister, Marilyn, in a family that quickly grew in number. All siblings listed in order of birth included Marilyn Joan, Virgil Allen, Harold Paul, Homer Loren, Harry Donald, Ruth Elaine, Sandra Kay, Carolyn Irene, Dennis Ray, Linda Diane, Frances Charlene, Beverly Jane, Russell Lee, and Pamela Sue.

Virgil married Rosalie Ruth Kenagy on 11/15/1957. They made their home in Des Moines Iowa where they began raising their children, Michael Allen, Vicki Jo, Veronica Jean and Mark Aaron. Virgil moved his family out of the city to Decatur Iowa in 1971, where Valeri Jayne joined her siblings. The family enjoyed living on a hill outside of town for almost 40 years before downsizing to 3 acres in the city.

Virgil was a hard-working person, laying brick for the majority of his life. He traveled the nation, building Pizza Huts in many states before deciding to work for himself closer to home. In addition to working on many basements and chimneys of local folks, he also built the base for the statue of liberty which resides on the square in Leon Iowa as well as the ‘Welcome to’ city signs along the Southern Iowa Highways.

Virgil passed away at the age of 87 following a long period of debility. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Rosie, his children and their families as well as surviving brothers, sisters, other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his son, Mark, his parents, and siblings including Marilyn, Homer, Don, Sandra and Russ as well as his best friend Donnie Pearson.
