James (Jim) Lewis Kolthoff
James Lewis Kolthoff, (Jim) 88 of Ackley passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 16th at his
home in Ackley, Iowa.
He was born on November 10, 1935, the son of Kobus and Alice (Klooster) Kolthoff. He
attended German Township School # 7.
He began farming with his father and brother for many years.
He married Alice Steinmeyer. They later divorced.
On September 7, 1990, he was united in marriage to Marlene Menteer at his home in rural
Aplington. Jim loved farming and raising livestock. After his retirement in 2004 he and Marlene
moved to rural Ackley and have now settled in Ackley. He was a dedicated member of the
Second Christian Reformed Church of Wellsburg, now the United Reformed Church where he
had served as a deacon.
Jim was known for his kind gentle spirit and sense of humor. He was never in a hurry and made
time to visit with everyone. No one was a stranger. He looked forward to family and
neighborhood get-togethers especially if there was a meal included!! He enjoyed cooking and
was known for his delicious rhubarb and apple pies. He was always ready to share conversation
and a cup of tea or coffee.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Marlene; daughters, Shelley (Dennis) Viet of Dike; Dedra
Kolthoff (Mike Hosch) of Kesley; Cynthia (Rich) Gronowski of Dike; Scott Menteer of Kansas
City, Mo; Sonya (Kurtis) Marks of Jesup; Shaunte’ (Jason) Gray of Kansas City, Mo; sisters,
Linda (Daryl) Geiken of Conrad; and Janice (James) Steinmeyer of Grundy Center; sister in-law,
Imogene Kolthoff of Wellsburg. Jim’s pride and joy was his 24 grandchildren and 13
great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Harlan Kolthoff; grandson, Clayton Kolthoff.
Funeral service will be at 2:00 on Sunday, June 30, 2024, at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church
(10164 D Ave, Ackley, Iowa), a time of fellowship will be held to visit and reminisce immediately
following, a private family burial is planned after the fellowship.
