Richard was born to Robert and Dorothy (Long) McCoy on April 23, 1944 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and lived his entire life in this area.  As a middle schooler, he rode hos bicycle and delivered papers for the Gazette.  Later, in high school he worked at the Cedar Rapids Public Library.  After graduating from Washington High School in 1962, he went to Cedar Rapids Business College for ana accounting certificate.  After completing his courses Richard went to work at Cedar Rapids Sheet Metal Company.  He was drafted into the US Army and served his two years at Fort Gordon, Georgia.  While at home on leave for Christmas 1966, Richard met his future wife, Nancy (Duhme). They married on November 15, 1969.  Son, Michael arrived in January 1976.  Richard returned to work at CRSMCO after returning from the Army and retired after 50 years.

Richard was a kind hearted and generous man who would help anyone.  He loved tinkering with clocks and toys.  Classic cars were an interest and he had a 1966 Mustang that he worked on.  Fixing non-working items or refinishing them was where he spent many hours.  After grandkids came along, there were stories to read and games to play, time at the playground, and rides on a golf cart.  He enjoyed spending time with the children.  Richard excelled at math related games or puzzles and some card games.

Favorite activities including Sailing with Hawkeye Sailing Club on most summer weekends.  Occasionally sailing in a large regatta out-of-state.  After retiring he liked to camp and travel, going to Arizona for the winter and visiting grandkids in California.  Rich like traveling and had been to almost every state in the US and several other countries.  When he was 12, he and cousin Sally and uncle Merle hiked to bottom of Grand Canyon, stayed overnight , then hiked back to the rim on the Bright Angel Trail.
