Dorothy Cole
Dorothy (Johnson) Cole was born on September 10, 1929 in Jewell, Iowa to George Johnson and Etta Mae (Williamson) Johnson. She passed away on April 29, 2025 in Iowa City, Iowa. Dorothy joined siblings Gladys, Roy, Ruby, Ferne, Alvin and Mavis. They lived on a farm and later moved to Ellsworth, Iowa where she graduated from high school.
After high school, Dorothy attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines. While attending, one of her loves was roller skating where she met and soon married Dudley Cole in 1949. They had three children: Dennis, Delores and Douglas. They lived in Ellsworth until 1966 and then moved to West Liberty, Iowa. In 1995, they became Winter Texans until Dudley’s passing in 2000. Dorothy stayed in Texas until 2020, where she lived in a wonderful adult community. She has always been very active with card games, bingo, dominos, quilting groups, potlucks and was always very active in her church. As a servant of God, she was always there to help anyone in need. Her family was also very important to her.
In 2020, Dorothy decided she needed to move back closer to family and returned to Iowa. She lived in Cedar Rapids for 3 years and then returned back home to West Liberty at Simpson Memorial Home.
Dorothy is survived by her son Dennis (Diane), grandchildren Darla, Jason, Tanya, Tim and Chris; son Doug, grandchildren Nick and Ashley and their mother Jeanne; and daughter Dee Dee and several great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings and husband.
A Celebration of Life will be held on June 9th at the Community Center in West Liberty, Iowa. Details to follow on this website. In lieu of flowers donations can be sent to her church, Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 116 E. Maxson Ave., West Liberty, Iowa 52776.
