Janice Ellen Weber
Janice Ellen Weber, 76, of Denver, Iowa passed away Saturday June 28, 2025 after a brief and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Jan was born May 22, 1949 in Marshalltown, Iowa the youngest daughter of Fred and Vera Nelson. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church. Jan grew up on a farm just outside of town and attended kindergarten at a one room school house before going to town for elementary, junior high, and high school. After graduating high school Jan attended Marshalltown Community College while working in the college library and the Marshalltown school district’s central libraries.Jan and Michael Weber were high school sweethearts and had known each other since preschool They were married on Friday June 13, 1969 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Marshalltown. They celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary on Friday June 13, 2025. The newlyweds moved to the Ames/Boone area where Jan worked for the Ames public schools and later the Des Moines Community College library.
Mike and Jan moved to the Cedar Falls/Waterloo area for Mike to work at the Cedar Falls Record and to start a family. When their four daughters were older Jan returned to the University of Northern Iowa to earn her master’s degree in library science and accepted a librarian position at Hansen Elementary. She retired from the Cedar Falls School District in 2014.
When she and Mike moved to their retirement home in Denver, Jan enjoyed FaceTiming with her youngest grandson to read every night, and volunteering at Denver schools. Jan always enjoyed reading, she gave each grandchild and her great-granddaughters something to read for every birthday and Christmas. She valued education, she often reminded us all “Once you have it (education), no one or no circumstance can ever take it away.”
Jan was also an accomplished seamstress, she and her sister Joyce made all the wedding dresses and bridesmaid dresses for all of her four daughters, along with clothes when the girls were younger, dolly clothes, barbie clothes, curtains for everyone’s homes, and various upholstery projects.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Vera Nelson, her sister Joyce Birks, her brother Jim Nelson, and her youngest daughter Kimberly Newby.
Jan is survived by Mike Weber, her loving husband of fifty-six years, her children Karen (Joe) Bobst, Katie Clarke (Fred Miene), Colleen (Erik) Nelson, and Chris Newby. Her grandchildren David (Alison) Bobst, Jared Minser, Delia (Blaise) Kramer-Nelson, Michael Clarke, Forrest Clarke, Isabelle Nelson, Hannah (Christian Nie) Clarke, Corbin Hill, and Cavin Newby. Her great-granddaughters Mara Bobst, Adelaide Bobst, and Marguerite Bobst.
