James "Jim" Dwight Townsend
James "Jim " Dwight Townsend passed away on March 12, 2025, at Thuesen Cottage at the Western Home in Cedar Falls, IA, after an extended illness. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Diamond Event Center at the Western Home on March 17, 2025, at 10 a.m.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Terry; his son, Matt (Miranda) of King of Prussia, PA; and his four cherished granddaughters, Addy, Emmy, Cari, and Izzy—truly the lights and loves of his life.
He is also survived by his brothers, Jeff (Cathy) of Colorado Springs, CO, and Brad (Lorraine) of Boise, ID; as well as his nephews, Ryan (Jennifer), Derek (Jen), and Mark (Rachael); and his nieces, Katie (Dave) and Jenni (Michael).
Jim was born on November 25, 1953, in Waterloo, IA. He graduated from West High School, the University of Northern Iowa, and the University of Iowa, where he earned his D.D.S. He completed a general practice residency with the U.S. Army in Lawton, OK, and served for three years in Frankfurt, Germany, where he trained in oral surgery.
After returning to Waterloo, Jim practiced dentistry for 28 years before making the bold decision—much to his wife's chagrin—to reenlist in the Army. He was stationed at Fort Campbell, KY, and later deployed to Iraq, where he was honored to care for the country's finest and bravest.
Jim was a man of many passions: his wife, son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughters; his walk with Jesus and his church; his chaplaincy work; his dental patients; his military service; the Iowa Hawkeyes; and muscle cars.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
