David B. Grassfield
David B. Grassfield, 90, of Anamosa, Iowa, wrapped up his final chapter on May 18, 2025, undoubtedly headed off to reunite with the love of his life, Shirley — and probably to give his brothers a hard time once again. Born on August 16, 1934, David lived a full, busy, and often mischievous life, with a grin never far from his face and a witty comment always in his back pocket.
David served in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1957, proudly defending freedom and likely organizing card games along the way. After his service, he spent many years at Wilson & Co., from which he “retired” — a term used loosely, since retirement for David meant jumping headfirst into new adventures. He co-owned and operated Jones County Cinema with his son, sold real estate with more charm than sales pitch, and drove a school bus for Anamosa schools, where he became a favorite among kids (and a legend for his stories and quick wit).
He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley, who probably had the coffee ready for his arrival; his parents Raymond and Loretta (Darrow) Grassfield; his sister Erma Cooper; and his brothers Richard, Donald, Darrel, Jerry, Kenneth, and Dennis — a rowdy reunion surely in progress.
Left to laugh at his old jokes and pass on his stories are his children: Loretta (Mark) Higgins, Twila (Ross) Michaelis, and Michael (Kristi) Grassfield. He also leaves behind his grandchildren Nicholas (Jess) Rundle, Jessica (Daniel) Krueger, Christopher Higgins and Patrick Higgins — and his great-grandchildren Berklie, Brynlie, Sadie, and Abby, who already show signs of inheriting his sense of humor. Surviving siblings include his sister Carole (Ron) Findley and brothers Arnold (Penny) Grassfield and Melvin (Linda) Grassfield, who know exactly how much trouble he could stir up.
David leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a few stubborn opinions. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by everyone lucky enough to have known him.
A Celebration of a Life Well Lived will take place at Wapsi Country Club on May 23, 2025, from 4pm – 8pm.
