James Michael Doyne Sr.
Joyce and Family, Listening to Jim Doyne on WMT Radio was a wonderful part of my childhood; and although I did not know him personally, I feel as though I knew him very well through all of you. His taught his grandsons to be thoughtful, kind, helpful, and dedicated. He taught his daughter to be devoted, conscientious and caring. He will always be there through you. Jean/Ms. O.
Jim’s voice was a fixture of my childhood. I wish I could hear it again as it was comforting compared to what media has turned into these days. Especially the special weather announcements when power outages left us only with a radio! The ironies of my encounters with Jim are somewhat remarkable. As a record store proprietor in a previous life, Jim came into my shop once and we ended up in a conversation about going back to college to further one’s education. It can be a little intimidating and I’d decided to do it. He told me about his experiences and assured me it was never too late. He was right, and he was very sweet about it. Oddly enough, I’d also started out studying Broadcast Journalism after high school so we had some things in common. And by the way, I knew who he was by his voice, before he’d even introduced himself. In a final irony - that led me to believe there must have been someone up there that wanted me to take note of this kind man - I was studying local records to see who lived in my house in Bowman Woods prior to my buying it in 2003, and low and behold Jim had. I still live there today. I wish I’d known him better but I do know he was a great guy, a great Iowan, and someone I look up to. My deepest condolences to your family. I will always remember Jim and I try to take good care of his old home! John C Fisher, Cedar Rapids
Joyce and Family - I am so sorry for your loss. My mother loved to listen to Jim on the radio, and I remember him as a very kind person. You have my deepest sympathy and are in my thoughts and prayers.
He was my favorite for so many Sundays when he played wonderful music and took requests. It was a sad day when WMT took him off Sunday afternoons and it is even a sadder day to hear of his passing. May he rest in peace. MUSICAL MEMORIES will play in my mind all my life. With deepest sympathy.
I was saddened to see that Jim passes away. I was raised by my grandparents, I greatly enjoyed listening to Musical Memories. When my daughters were little, we would visit my grandfather at Manor Care every Sunday listening to Jim on the radio in the car. They are now in their 30’s and still talk about the music they heard. They devolved an appreciation for 30’s,40’s and 50’s music because of him. Not many kids in their 30’s have Dean Martin, Perry Como, and Andrew Sisters on their IPhones, but mine do. To quote Bob Hope, “Thanks for the memories”.
