Joan Ruth DeWitt

Joan (Joanie) Ruth DeWitt of Marion Iowa passed away on Wednesday, May 14 at St Lukes Hospital, Hospice Unit. She was born on December 8th, 1955, in Michigan to parents Robert and Ruth Shorey. Ruth later remarried Howard Willias, who loved and supported Joanie as his own.

She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Stephen DeWitt. Joanie was the youngest of four daughters, sister to Suzanne (Will) Scheer, Lori (Tim) Gordon, Christine (George) Opie. She was a beloved Aunt to Lisa, Laura, Jane, Pam, Greg, Katie and Robert, plus numerous nieces and nephews, and loving cousins. Also, sister-in-law Susan DeWitt and brother-in-law Jack DeWitt.

Joanie loved watching her hummingbirds when they returned to Iowa in the spring. She enjoyed spending winters with her husband in Florida, walking on the beach and playing golf.

Joanie spent numerous summers at her Grandfather’s Canadian farm on Lake Huron. These were special childhood memories for her.  During her time as an Elmcrest Country Club member, she enjoyed playing ladies’ day golf and bowling with close friends. She relished beating Steve, whether it was golf, bowling, board games or playing cards. She was supportive of Steve throughout his business career. Joanie loved her two dogs, Luchi and Pooky. And her cat, TeeGee, who she taught how to catch playing cards in midair.

Joanie was preceded in death by her parents and in-laws Richard and Betty DeWitt.
Joanie received wonderful medical care from the hospice team at St Lukes Hospital. She was very strong and courageous throughout her illness.

Joanie touched the lives of many with her kindness and unwavering love. She will be deeply missed.

Memorials may be directed to Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice of Cedar Rapids, IA.
