Joseph was born on October 31st, 1940, to Joseph and Catherine (Schmitt) Hageman in rural Fayette County, Iowa. He received his education at St. Luke’s Catholic School in St. Lucas. At the young age of 16, following the loss of his father, Joseph took on the responsibility of managing the family farm. With resilience and a deep respect for the land, he didn't just work it—he cared for it. His dedication to dairy management and raising beef earned him recognition and built friendships at the sale barn.
On April 26th, 1960, Joseph was united in marriage to Emma Gayle McCabe, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in rural Cresco, Iowa. Together they raised eight children and built a life rooted in faith, love, and laughter. Their bond was an inspiration, often highlighted by their joyful dancing—capturing the "longest-married couple" honor at every one of their grandchildren’s weddings.
Joseph approached life with curiosity and wit. He was known for his warm, endearing laughter and the memorable “Zip wisdom” he readily shared. Joe made time for family fun-whether it was slow pitch softball games, canoeing, hosting barn dances, attending chuck wagon races, or sledding.
A lifelong farmer, Joseph enjoyed many aspects of farming but especially chopping. He balanced his love of farming with a variety of interests, including fishing, stock car racing, rodeos, wrestling and other sporting events. He was a proud supporter of his grandchildren, attending their games and activities when possible. Joseph cherished his role of being a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Catherine Hageman; one brother, Florian (Irma) Hageman; four sisters, Lorraine (Carl) Wurzer, Sister Joselda Hageman, Rosemary (Phil) Kruse, and Bernice (Ray) Karnik; and two grandchildren, Michael Croell and Paul Hageman.
Joseph is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Emma Gayle Hageman; his children: Ricky Hageman of St. Lucas, Randy (Gayle) Hageman of St. Lucas, Roxane (Jim) Franzen of Denver, Renae (William) Croell of New Hampton, Rhonda (Keith) Schaufenbuel of St. Lucas, Robyn (Dave) Vsetecka of Lawler, Ron (Catherine Miller) Hageman of St. Lucas, and Ramona (Jeremy) Stammeyer of Decorah. He is also survived by 23 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to the family or to St. Croix Hospice.
