Michael "Mike" Edwin Bessey

Michael “Mike” Edwin Bessey, 77, of Winthrop, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by family Thursday night. Born on May 22, 1947, in Manchester, Iowa, to Florence Marie Givens and Edwin Clifford Bessey. He attended school in Delaware county, Iowa. He had many interesting jobs through this life including owning his own auto body shop and car lot.

Mike was a man who lived a long life full of adventure. In his younger days, he loved riding his motorcycle coast to coast, and proudly attended the Sturgis motorcycle rally for 50 years straight. He joined the army at age 17 and served his country in the Vietnam war. Mike enjoyed fast cars, boats, travel, and spending time with people. He was always generous and trustworthy to his friends. In his later years, he came to prefer spending time at home with his family and pets and playing with his grandchildren, as well as enjoying music and his favorite westerns. He was always growing as a person and always did the best he could with what he had. Mike will be remembered for his wisdom, resilience, and strength even in his final moments.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 31 years, Kathleen Suzanne Bessey, and their twin daughters, Katie and Holly Bessey of Winthrop, Iowa; daughters Shelley (Scott) Studebaker of Horntown Virginia; Stacy Jean Spratt of Manchester, Iowa, Joyce McCullough of Newport News, Virginia, And son George(Kimberly) Bessey of New Bern, North Carolina. Mike also leaves behind his siblings; sisters Sindee(Randy) Gohde, and Patrice Kelchen, Linda Lahr, his brother, Arnie Pond, as well as his 6 granddaughters; Hanna, Charey, Karrie, Lilly, Zoey and Joplin, 5 grandsons; Justin, Austin, Gage, Liam, and Lochlan, and two great grandsons; Andrew and Kingston.

A private burial will be held for family and friends on June 21st at 2:30pm at the Winthrop Cemetary followed by dinner at Pizza Ranch at 4:30pm. Friends of Mike are welcome to attend.
