Edward Michael Schima, M.D.
May 28, 1938–September 30, 2023
Mass of Christian Burial: October 12, 2023, 10 am, at St. John’s Church at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska; interment at Calvary Cemetery in Sterling, Illinois. Donations in Ed’s name can be made to Doctors Without Borders and the Humane Society of the United States.
Ed passed away peacefully on September 30, 2023, surrounded by family. Born and raised in Chicago, he was the loving son of Edward Joseph and Ida (Thomas) Schima, favorite brother of Mary Jane (Junge), dedicated husband of 57 years to Mary Patricia (Foley), and beloved father of Jennifer, Susan, and Stephen. A lifelong student, Ed was a graduate of St. Ignatius College Prep, the College of the Holy Cross, and the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern. He served in the United States Air Force and achieved the rank of captain. A member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society, he went on to complete residencies in Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic and Neurology at Harvard. He practiced medicine in Omaha, Nebraska, for nearly 50 years at the Omaha Neurological Clinic. He was an adjunct faculty member of both Creighton and University of Nebraska medical schools, where he received multiple teaching awards as well as Creighton University’s Master Clinician Award.
Known for his dry wit, kind heart, and calming presence, Ed helped countless patients, colleagues, friends, and family members. He was a frustrated but eternally optimistic golfer; a lover of film, television, and books; and enjoyed sunshine, long runs, and walking his dog. He will be deeply missed by all who had the good fortune to know him.
