Michael James Carey
Michael James Carey, 84, passed away on October 18, 2024 at his home in Maynard, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 25, 2024 from 9:00 AM until 10:30 AM at St. Francis of Assisi in Fayette. Funeral mass will begin at 11 AM with a luncheon following at the church. Inurnment will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery in Oelwein.
He was born on July 15, 1940, in Oelwein, Iowa, to Francis J. Carey and Irene L. (Fortsch) Carey. Michael led a fulfilling life characterized by his dedication to family, his careers, and his passions.
Michael graduated from high school in Maynard in 1957, and honorably served in the United States Air Force for four years and two months during the Vietnam war area. In addition to his military service, he embarked on other careers with Chicago Northwestern Railroad, Brand-S Plywood Mill in Corvallis, Oregon; bus driver for West Central Maynard, and a farmer. Michael was united in marriage to Joyce DeeAnn Stagner on October 1, 1960 in Corvallis, Oregon.
His other life passions were old cars, “some” tractors, horses, playing golf and being part of a pool league. Michael was a lifelong member of the Catholic church.
Michael is survived by his daughters Sheila (Kent), Reinking, Sherri Carey both of Oelwein; sons, Matthew (Lori) Carey of Randalia, and Mark Carey of Oelwein; grandchildren Valerie Buehler (Lyle), Jordan (Caitlin) Reinking, Garrick (Taylor) Reinking; great grandchildren Jocelyn, Natalie, Landon Buehler; Wyatt, Henry, Jack Reinking, and Colt Reinking. Also surviving are his siblings Richard (JoAnn) Carey of Shell Rock; Sue Mahoney of Oelwein; and Steve Carey of Westgate, Carol (Warren) Odekirk of Bloomington, IL; sister-in-law, Roselene Carey of Oelwein; and brother-in-law, Lynn (Cheryl) Stagner of Corvallis, OR.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Joyce; infant son, James; his parents; his parents-in-law, Dayle and Iva Stagner; his brothers, William and Dennis; and brother-in-law, Ray Mahoney.
